Senate Chairman Issues Production Orders for PTI Senators Ejaz Chaudhry and Aon Abbas
Islamabad: Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani has issued production orders for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senators Ejaz Chaudhry and Aon Abbas Buppi, ensuring their attendance at the Senate session scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 AM.
Ejaz Chaudhry’s Detention and Previous Production Order
Senator Ejaz Chaudhry has been imprisoned at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail for nearly 19 months. In January, a production order was issued for him to attend the Senate session, but he was unable to appear. His absence led opposition members to protest by displaying placards featuring his image during Senate proceedings.
Aon Abbas Buppi’s Arrest and Opposition Concerns
Senator Aon Abbas Buppi was recently detained by Bahawalpur police over allegations of illegal deer poaching in Cholistan. Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Shibli Faraz, questioned the legality of his arrest, demanding clarity on whether the Senate Secretariat was informed beforehand.
Production Orders Issued Under Senate Rules
The production orders, issued under Rule 84 of the Senate Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, 2012, mandate authorities to present the detained senators at the start of each sitting during the ongoing 347th session and return them to custody after the proceedings.
Chairman Gilani Stresses Rule-Based Approach
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Chairman Gilani reaffirmed his commitment to parliamentary regulations, stating, “I have followed parliamentary rules throughout my career. If I take any action, it is always by the book.” He emphasized the need to uphold production orders for a functioning parliamentary environment, adding that he would ensure Senator Buppi’s attendance.
Buppi’s Response to Arrest
Following his arrest, Senator Buppi’s media team released a statement on his social media, condemning the charges as politically motivated. The statement further revealed that his bail request had been denied, resulting in his continued judicial custody.
The upcoming Senate session will likely witness strong reactions from PTI members and opposition leaders regarding the arrests and production orders.
